New parents and our journey of discovery with our little Sprout, Aaron

Our little charmer

We went off to a picnic today for Jared’s birthday and I shot a short video of Aaron on his quilt while Gina went for a walk. He was a little preoccupied with the phone but gave me a few smiles towards the end. I also shot a short video of Gina playing with him and he had a couple things to say to her too.

Isn’t he a cutie

It has been a while since we posted here. Life has been a bit of a whirlwind the last few months. Anyway, I just had to share this photo of our little guy:

Isn’t he a cutie? This is one of my favourite photos of him.

6 (and a little bit) week doctor visit

We took Aaron for his 6 week check up on Thursday.

Dr was very happy with the Sprout.  He now weighs 4.5kg (9.9 pounds) and is 57cm (22.4 inches) long.

We actually thought he would be a little heavier than that, closer to 5kg.  We are going to get our shots tomorrow so he will be weighed again and we will see how much he has gained in 4 days.

We still haven’t had our first smile yet but its coming, we see the dimple more and more.

So all in all Aaron is doing great and besides the lack of sleep (we are still not really sleeping longer than 3 hours at a time) mom and dad are doing great too.

The Birthday Present from Grams

So my mom gave Paul (and me by default) a great birthday present.

8 hours straight!

Traditionally Paul celebrates his birthday by spending the evening with friends, we have dinner and see a movie (last night was burgers at Chuckleberries and The Golden Compass).  So my mom volunteered (I don’t think it was any hardship) to have Aaron for a sleep over last night.  So we packed his bag, expressed lots of milk and kissed our little angel goodnight at Grams house.

Even though I thoroughly enjoyed dinner and the movie, I was constantly worrying about Sprout, I called Grams twice and was told he was sleeping and an angel and not to worry.
As for the 8 hours straight, bliss!  We climbed into bed at 11pm and woke up just after 7am.
Now we are getting ready to go and collect the munchkin.
Cant wait!

Dummies, Nappies and 3am Feeds

Ok, so a bit of an update…

Aaron is a month old!!!  I cant believe it, time has just flown by.  Next thing I know he will be asking for pocket money and borrowing the car..   Ok maybe not so much, but you know what I mean.

Dummies…

What a life saver, Aaron loves his dummy, we joke that we should have called him Maggie.  He’s funny about the dummy though, you have to fight him to get the thing in his mouth but once its in he sucks like there is no tomorrow and then cries when it falls out.

So the question is should babies be allowed a dummy or not?  I don’t know what we would do without ours but I am worried about the long term effects of sucking a dummy.  I firmly believe its better to suck a dummy than his thumb but maybe he shouldn’t have a dummy at all.  In an attempt to be as non-destructive as possible we have a Nuk orthodontic dummy.

Nappies…

I never thought that I would be able to change dirty nappies, wee nappies yes, poo nappies, not really!  But I do, lots of them!  Our boy is a champ.  We learnt the hard way a while ago that the nappy should be high up at the back, lets just say "YEEEUUUCCCHHHH!"  But I coped.  I can even empty our Angelcare nappy bin (this is an achievement because I cant even touch the kitchen bin, we have a foot pedal bin and I cringe/gag/hurl just opening the bin with my toes…)

3am Feeds…

… have many many emotions and feelings connected to them.  Calm and peaceful, just the two of us.  Crying and frustration when Aaron wont latch or settle down.  Awe and wonder, looking at him and knowing he is mine.

In closing here is a recent picture of the Sprout…

Baby acne

We noticed what looks like a rash on Aaron’s face the other day and it looks like it has been spreading.  It looks like a rash of red dots on his cheeks.  I did a little research on the Web and came up with something called baby acne.  It turns out baby acne is pretty normal and happens as a result of an hormonal shift that stimulates oil glands in the skin.  It should clear up and one way to "treat" it is just to wash the baby’s face with warm water and not to use lotions or creams or medication (unless your doctor says you should).

Here are a couple sites that talk about baby acne:

Aaron’s play gym

We put Aaron on his new play gym this morning for the first time.  We wanted to put him on his stomach and get him to start lifting his head and eventually crawling.  We also want to stimulate him a bit more, let him get a little exercise moving around and reaching for stuff.  Anyway, here he is on his play gym:
